Popcorn’s Popularity and a Survey of Moviegoer Popcorn Preferences

Kagome conducted an online survey of 500 movie theater customers around the country about their experience and preferences around movie concession food. Here’s what they had to say about popcorn…

·      52% of movie goers always purchase food from theater  concessions.

·      87% of customers who visit theater concessions purchase popcorn.

·      81% of movie customers are interested in purchasing popcorn with flavors beyond butter and salt.

·      66% of movie customers purchase and consume popcorn at least once a month outside of the movie going experience.

Popcorn is projected to be eaten by 234 million Americans in 2020. Garrett Popcorn Shops out of Chicago features a cult favorite combination of cheddar cheese and caramel other salty sweet combos you will see on store shelves include; salted caramel, sweet and salty kettle corn.  Popular flavors run the gambit from savory to sweet and plain; sea salt and butter, salt and herb, blue cheese, white cheddar, chili lime, golden turmeric, and truffle.

Thanks to social media, consumers are more aware of food and flavor trends globally and younger consumers are becoming more adventurous in their eating. 

“With exposure to international foods starting at an early age, whether in restaurants or at home, Generation Z is more likely to be open to the latest international food trend or innovative fusion creation,” Jenny Zegler, associate director, Mintel Food & Drink, said.

Consumers desire some flavor adventure within the realm of the familiar.  An example of familiar flavor with a twist is spicy jalapeno combined with ranch, blue cheese and garlic, or sriracha mayo. Exploring popcorn flavors beyond the classic butter and salt can help create interest and excitement for your customers and keep them coming back for more!
